Venture Capital Must Be a Rifle Shot, Not a Shotgun

The Lazy Habit of Modern VC

The venture capital industry has developed a fundamentally lazy habit: the shotgun approach.

Firms raise massive funds and proceed to spread capital across dozens of wildly disparate startups. They do this hoping that one or two massive, lucky wins will cover the spectacular, inevitable failures of the rest of the portfolio.

We reject this model entirely.

This methodology is not just a massive waste of resources; it is fundamentally undisciplined. It entirely misses the point of what strategic investing should be. VC investing must be a precise rifle shot, not a blind shotgun blast into the dark.

Purpose Over Fluff

Each investment must have a distinct purpose. It must play a critical, defined role in a broader corporate strategy. At Dale Ventures, we view our portfolio not as a random collection of lottery tickets, but as a meticulously constructed ecosystem. Investments should fit together perfectly, like puzzle pieces.

However, strategic alignment doesn't mean ignoring raw opportunity. We also invest in deals driven by sheer entrepreneurial spirit and the right metrics. When a good idea promises to make a positive difference in fundamental human verticals of need, we pay attention. Money tends to naturally flow to spaces that solve real problems.

Our corporate vision is to help other entrepreneurs succeed, thereby building a bond to do even greater things. Success and trust are achieved in measured steps, not giant leaps. Success is a symbiotic dance. When you align the right idea with the right partners, doors open. Opportunities unlock.

The Supporting Cast

Even the greatest performers and athletes in the world need a supporting cast.

They rely on coaches, trainers, producers, directors, agents, marketers, accountants, lawyers, bankers, investment managers, wardrobe consultants, chefs, nutrition experts, mind-balancing coaches, and sleep coaches.

Highly functional teams are what enable long-term success. The star shines brightest when the saddle is symbiotic. Ultimately, the team wins.

Promising entrepreneurs are no different. You cannot build an empire alone.

Demand Precision

All actions must be purposeful. As an investor, if you cannot draw a direct, undeniable line between an investment and your core strategic vision, you should walk away immediately. Throwing money at a trend simply because it is popular among traditional venture capitalists is a dereliction of fiduciary duty.

Founders should demand this level of precision from their investors. You want a partner who understands exactly how your company fits into their broader vision, and who provides the elite supporting cast you need to scale.

Leave the shotgun approaches to the gamblers. We prefer the rifle.
